My take on silverware.

The only real way to load silverware into the dishwasher is upside down...

For two reasons:

1. When you reach back into the dishwasher to grab a plate you won't gash your arm open on a knife if the handle is pointing up.

2. When the dishwasher is done doing it's thing, to remove the CLEAN silverware it's better to touch the handle right? Right.

So who's right? Dirty up the clean silverware & possibly bleed to death on them & do it Meagan's way OR Just put them business end down like I do?

I think it's poll time! Check over on the right to vote.

  1. Definitely business end down - I hadn't thought of the cleanliness issue, I just prefer not to slice my hand while reaching or unloading!

  2. I always put the spoons, forks and butter knifes with the handle down because they NEVER get clean, but the sharp items ALWAYS go handle UP because of my WONDERFUL little todder Julian LOVES to help momma (aka DRIVE HER INSANE) load and unload the dishes! :) So I do both but you didnt have a poll button for that JAMI! :)

  5. Ah... so we're NOT the only ones who've had the silverware argument! Jason is of the handle-down-sharp-pointy-ends-up philosophy and I think the opposite. Oddly enough, Jason, like Meagan, is also the dishwasher* in the house, so it's kind of become a moot point. His reasoning has more to do with efficiency than cleanliness though; he says he can "fit more in there that way."

*Jason is the designated dishwasher because he complains about the way I do dishes. So, I said, "F*ck it! YOU do it then!"

  6. Yep... Exactly why Meagan is the dishwasher & not me. I guess doing it my way just doesn't get them clean enough. If I can't clean the dishes, I can't do them. Coincidence? I think not!

  7. We do handle down, but mostly because our old dishwasher sucked and the basket was all broken so the forks poked through. I do hate getting poked with knives as I unload though! And spoons we do handle up. I guess we don't really have a system!

  8. In my house its both up and down. Handles up for knives, handles down for forks and spoons. Actually I think my mom just taught me that way so I wouldn't stab myself everytime I did the dishes. Cause lets face it, back in my day, we didn't have dishwashers.

  9. Who cares as long as it gets done and the silverware is clean for the next meal. Life is too short to get bent out of shape over silverware. As with anything just be aware that the other person may do it a little different than you and just pay attention when you reach in.
